UL, LLC Laboratory Support Technician in Northbrook, Illinois

A Laboratory Support Technician will support the analysis, development, modification, testing and maintenance of operating systems software. Supports business leadership and senior development professionals in the analysis of automation software and hardware system needs, options, risks, costs, and impact on business process and goals. Evaluates supplied software products and applications. Independently analyzes and isolates the application issues and

performs problem resolution.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Analyzes system requirements, preparing of specifications, designing, coding, testing, debugging and documenting. Implements complex requirements for multiple

platforms, operating systems, and applications.

  • Resolves problems by devising or modifying procedures. Considers equipment capacity and limitations, operating time, and form of desired results when developing

resolutions.

  • Supports the identification of system requirements by interviewing users, interviewing and selecting vendors (if applicable), analyzing applications, evaluating existing and proposed systems, and recommending solutions.

  • Independently analyzes and isolates application issues and performs problem resolution.

  • Monitors progress of software-based projects by tracking activity, resolving problems, publishing progress reports, and recommending actions.

  • Improves systems performance by investigating problems, developing specifications, identifying trends in technology, and recommending solutions.

  • Assists with formulating and defining specifications for software programming applications and modifies existing applications.

  • Updates and maintains automation hardware and/or software as needed.

  • Develops, designs, documents, and/or applies new laboratory instrumentation, automated test systems, test fixtures needed for laboratory testing or in support of upgrading the laboratory infrastructure.

  • Supports the installation, testing and validation of the new and/or revised instrumentation, automated systems, or test fixtures to ensure quality compliance and user requirements.

  • Operates designated laboratory equipment and tools as directed.

  • Responds to user requests to repair and/or modify existing laboratory instrumentation, automated systems, and test fixtures.

  • Prepares technical documentation such as manual instructions for hardware and software, calibration procedures, test method validations, etc.

  • May assist PEs and/or Engineering to validate modified existing methods or develop and validate new test methods.

  • Proactively seeks automation opportunities to resolve complex testing issues.

  • Performs other duties as directed.

  • 2 years of formal education with Associate Degree in Computer Science or certification as a technician through acknowledged organization.

  • Generally 4 years or more of related experience of demonstrated competency.

  • Ensures customer convenient solutions meet both customer and company needs.

  • Demonstrates ability to proactively adapt actions through preparation and contingency plans.

  • Communicated effectively in written and oral form.

  • Follows instructions furnished in written, oral and diagram form.

  • Demonstrates a good knowledge of equipment used within the conformity assessment industry.

  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.

  • Develops and delivers clear impactful actionable communication to all stakeholders.

  • Is a highly trusted, direct and trustful individual.

  • Basic knowledge of common laboratory test and equipment used within the conformity assessment industry.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as operations maintenance and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to compose routine reports and business correspondence.

  • Ability to present standard information and respond to questions from individuals or small groups of internal or external clients.
